You may be asking, “what can I do about a chip or crack in my windshield?” The good news is that in many cases a replacement windshield is not necessary. Depending on the size and location of the chip, many can be repaired in-place, however larger cracks and chips normally require replacing the entire windshield, so it is important to have them fixed early on.
It is no mystery that replacing a windshield can be costly. If your windshield has been chipped by a rock or other piece of debris, don’t panic. If the size of the chip is no larger than a quarter (this includes any cracks spidering out from the chip), it can be repaired. Even if the chip is not in your line of sight, it should still be repaired to prevent it from expanding later.
If you look closely at the chip, you may notice some dark spots within it. Sometimes this can be mistaken for debris, but that is actually air trapped between the outside layer of glass and the layer of film which bonds the inside layer to it. The air is vacuumed out, and a resin is forced into the chipped area, effectively sealing the damage. If the chip has penetrated completely through the windshield, or the chip is very large, this repair method can’t be applied.

A chip may not seem like a big deal and in the short term it may not be, however small chips can expand and lead to cracks, which in turn lead to a hazard for you and anyone riding with you.
